Per Toyota:

If your vehicle is a 1999 model year or newer and is equipped with a timing belt, you should replace it every 90,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first.

Quote:
For all other Toyota vehicles equipped with a timing belt, we recommend that the timing belt be inspected with the other drive belts at 60,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first, and every 15,000 miles thereafter and replaced as necessary. Because the costs involved with inspecting the timing belt may be similar to those of having it replaced, many customers may find it more cost effective to replace the timing belt at 60,000-mile intervals.

Should the timing belt break while you are driving the vehicle, severe engine damage could result. The higher the speed, the more extensive the damage could be.

If you have additional questions, please refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide or Owner's Manual Supplement or contact your local dealer.

If your vehicle is equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt, there is no prescribed replacement interval.

Is there somewhere we could find out which of these belt engines are interference and which aren't?

This article appears to be from 1998 since it doesn't list any newer cars, so it might not have the engine you are wondering about. Here's an excerpt from it.

Quote:
the only Toyota interference engines are the older 1.5L Tercel, 2.4L Pickup and 1.8L Camry and Corolla engines.

Thanks Tox. It looks like my 98 Camry V6 is not an interference engine.

Glad I found what you were looking for. Are you trying to see if you can let the timing belt go longer since it's not an interference engine?

I actually changed it back in February. I called a few dealers and asked that question but none gave me a straight answer.

Tony,

Check this Gates Interference Engine PDF:

http://www.gates.com/downloads/downl...older=brochure

Looks to be pretty accurate and very good information.

The Tundra 4.7L 2UZ-FE engine is an interference design and is listed.
