I too attempted to change the oil today and too ran into the problem of the oil filter wrench not fitting properly.

The filter wrench I bought from PepBoys (A258, made by RiteFit) was not fitting properly. The NAPA store near me does not have a KD 3253. I ended up buying a plastic KD 3860 (a 65/67-14 combo). It fits pretty well, no cutting of the 67 portion was needed.

5-30

Hi,

Proud new owner of a 07 limited crew max with TRD big brake kit...I read this thread yesterday & went out bought my filter and oil. Did the first oil/filter change today and when I was reading the owners manual I realized that I mis-read the viscosity. I ended up putting in Mobil 1 5-30 instead of 5-20. Do you guys think I will be OK until the next oil change? Thanks...

This is straight from Toyota.

Quote:
5w-30 oil viscosity will not affect engine. Advise on next oil change choose to use 5w-20 for best gas mileage.
Quote:
Our vehicles come from the factory with natural petroleum-based engine oil. We are currently recommending American Petroleum Institute (API) grade SJ petroleum-based engine oil. In moderate climates, this oil should have a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) viscosity rating of 5W-30. However, 10W-30 is recommended for use in areas with higher temperatures. In our high mileage tests with preventative maintenance performed at the recommended intervals, the recommended natural petroleum-based oil has provided excellent service.

Hello,

Awesome write up.

I am looking to get a 08/09 tundra 5.7 after I have saved up some cash, but like you guys here I like to do ALOT of research on any vehicle I plan on purchasing.

So first question, why does toyota not use a conventional screw on oil filter?

I currently have a 98 Z71 6" lift and 35's, true duals and a hypertech. And a highly modded 99 GTP. Those both will go bye bye when I get the Tundra.

Take care, and thanks for having me.

I've been told it has to do with EPA regulation crap. The paper filter holds less residual oil than a metal canister filter. Take it for what its worth. I think it's BS and would still like to have a spin on (only for ease, though). I've been told that the cartridge filters are usually more rugged and have hier efficiency, but I think efficiency just depends on the media characteristics (filter type, surface area, etc).

First One Done

What a pain, I did the first change today. The first thing that happened was the Parts dept gave me the wrong filters. It seemed like a good deal, buy 3 get one free until I gor the Mobil 1 5 w 20 Sythetic home, began work, and guess what wrong filter. The partd dept sent a guy out with 4 Cartridges to my house and an even swap for the spin ons. After that it was smooth sailing. The only thing is 7 quarts didn't get it to the fill line on the dipstick. I guess I got all of the old oil out. I took about 3/4 of the 8th quart to get it to full. I even ran it for about 10 minutes, sat it for 5 and re checked it.

Thanks for the pics.

^^Like I mentioned in the write-up, the manual does call for 7.4 quarts, but I use 7 and it perfectly in the middle of the "fill line" and "full line".

Oil and filter change takes 7.4qts. according to the manual. I, like you, end up putting in nearly 7.75 qts.
Dry fill is 8.9 qts, so there is still 1-1.5 qts. of old oil left in the engine after an oil change.
