ALL SEASONS ARE NO MATCH FOR 4 WINTER TIRES. I SEE SALES PEOPLE THAT ARE ON THE ROAD ALL DAY AND THEY WANT WINTER TIRES. IF YOUR DAILY DRIVING IS IN THE SNOW YOU WILL BE SAFER AND THEY MAY SAVE A TOW BILL AND/OR DAMAGE TO YOUR TRUCK AND SELF SHOULD YOU SLIDE OFF THE ROAD. GET THE STUDS IF YOU THINK YOU WILL BE TRAVELING ALOT ON HARD PACKED SNOW & ICE. THERE ARE PROS & CONS TO WINTER TIRES OR WINTER TIRES WITH STUDS. PROS - THEY PROVIDE THE BEST TRACTION & WITH STUDS THE BEST ON HARD PACKED SNOW & ICE. THEY ARE COMPOUNDED TO STAY SOFT AND FLEXIBLE IN THE COLD THUS GRABBING THE ROAD BETTER. CONS - NOISY, NEED TO BE INSTALLED/FALL & REMOVED/SPRING & WILL REDUCE FUEL MILEAGE. FACTS ON STUDDING TIRES THE TIRE MUST BE PINNED FOR STUDS , MEANING HAVE THE HOLES IN THE TREAD TO ACCEPT THEM. MOST STUDDING IS DONE BY YOUR LOCAL TIRE PROFESSIONAL AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. TIRES PINNED FOR STUD CAN BE USED W/O STUDS. ONLY NEW (NOT USED) WINTER TIRES SHOULD BE STUDDED. IF YOU STUD A 1/2 WORN TIRE CHANCES ARE THE STUD WILL NOT "SEAT IN" AND WILL MOST LIKELY COME OUT OR WORSE PUSH THREW THE TIRE. I ATTACHED 2 SERVICE BULLETINS. ONE OUTLINING THE STATE AND PROVIDENCE REGULATIONS ON WINTER TIRES WITH STUDS SO EVERYONE CAN CHECK THEIR LOCAL REGS AND YOU CAN OUTLINE THE AREAS WHERE YOU WILL TRAVEL. THE OTHER HAS MORE GENERAL INFO. WHAT MAKES A GOOD WINTER TIRE GREAT IS ANOTHER POST IF ANYONE WANTS TO HEAR IT BILL |

| Ok, here's my tire question. I have the original 20year old tires on my pontoon trailer. The tread is almost new, no wear, they hold perfect air all year. The only problem is they are cracked really bad on the sidewalls. Should they be replaced? I'll try and take a pic if you want, but I don't think you'll be able to see the cracks. There's 4 so I never have wanted to!

| That depends on a couple of things. Are the tires loaded heavy for their capacity? How far & often are you going to tow it. If you tow it to the lake in the spring and take it out in the fall, and it's fairly close, I would think you're ok. If you tow it a couple times a month and tow on the interstate at higher speeds I would replace them. Even though they're not leaking the cracking is tell you the casing is breaking down. The carrying capacity and reliability is reduced. I may actually be able to be competitive on these tires. Yours are bias tires. Not that expensive & not really worth risking a flat or something worse. |
