School Is Open - Lesson 4

Tire Components & Construction.

Thought you guys may be interested what a tires looks like inside.

I also thought I would take advantage of this picture to talk about rim width and how it affects the bead and sidewall of a tire.

I marked the left side bead where it meets the rim. Notice how the two mate.
Now try to picture how those two would fit together with a wider tire.
With the wider tire the bead may not fit the angle of the rim. This improper fit will change the angles and internal stresses of the sidewall and how it flexes, heat build up and contact patch.

Would you happen to know much about internal bead locks? Would that help when you put a wider tire on a narrower rim? Like putting a 325 or a 305 on an 8" rim which seems to be fairly common on the new Tundra.

Tox I don't think bead locks would help much.
The problem is when you pull those beads together.
It bows the tread, changes how the belt package ride/sits.

I think everyone is wondering. What if I'm only outside the spec by a little.
For example, 305/65R18 tires require a min 8.5" rim. Will a 8.0 rim work. Technically - no. but it may work for you depending on a lot of variable such as tire pressure, load, heat, steering torque.

You most likely won't have catastrophic tire failure, but you may have irregular tread wear, sidewall stress cracks or splits, resulting in removing the tire from service prematurely.
