Can I go from 275/65/r18 to 285/65/r18 and no rubbing?

Hi,

I'm currently riding on BFG Ragged Trails P275/65/R18. I have a 2008 Tundra with the TRD Off Road Package. I have the Tundra skid plate installed. I plan on (or hope to) buying the BFG AT KO 285/65/18. Can I go from the 275 to 285 size without experiencing any rubbing? Will I have to cut the skid plate?

What is the largest sized tire I can install on my 18" stock wheels?

Yes you can, but that is as big as you can go without a lift and or cutting.
I have the same tires and have no problems.

Sorry for the jack, but why did the guys at STS tell me that Tundra owners were experiencing transmission trouble after installing bigger tires. The Sales guy at the dealer was vague with his opimion also, but said he recommmended 275/55/20. My stock is 255/70/18. 08 Tundra. DC. 4x4.

Rasta, I don't recall anyone here reporting tranny problems as a result of bigger tires, other than the speedo might be off.

no problems here......my truck is way better now then when it was stock....smoother ,quieter and handles way better....

Thought as much but only after putting back stock size tires, and reading up on the forum. When I'm ready I'll do the 3 inch leveling kit, with now tires and next set I'll go bigger.

Hi guys

Im about to do the same by installing a new set of Firestone destination MTs 285/65/18s on my stock 07 4X4 double cab TRD with the alloy wheels. Im having them powder coated satin black to look clean without the big expense. I dont want or need bigger rims for my use.

Maybe when i get it back together i can post up a photo here with a short report on how it all worked out and so on

Hi I've got an '07 DC 4x4 Longbed with Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks (set to the highest notch to level the truck) I put BFG AT K/O 285/65s on and they did rub the skid plate when I had the wheel at full right or left lock. I crawled under with a pair of vice grips and bent the corners of the skid plate up and there's been no more rubbing.

By the way, I think the truck looks WAY better now that it's level and has meatier tires on it. My stock longbed had a way of looking more like an el Camino than a truck.

Front shocks or 2.25 Level kit ?

Hi Paddle

Im about to do the same exact thing, and I only want to level the front end out. I was thinking the lower cost route since my truck does not have that many miles on it, and try the Top Gun Customs 2.25" level kit mounting spacer plates. I wonder how they work out $99.00


But I have seen your shocks and Im sure they are much better than my TRD units that come stock.

How do you like the 5100s and could you tell much of a difference in how they soak up the bumbs, and how is the ride quality. So final spring notch is what you ended up to get it level I take it.

Im either going with Toto MT or Firestone MT, I have a set of each coming in locally and the shop is nice enough to send back the ones I dont want. I was going with the Stones, but Im moving to Nevada soon and my back yard is very rocky and I see where alot of guys have had the lugs tear off under those conditions over time.

Hi Dale-

I have the shocks at the top notch (highest lift) and the truck looks level to me.

The shocks feel great- a little stiffer but not ridiculously so- I hit the dips a little faster now and haven't bottomed out at all. The truck is more truck-like and less Camry-like.

I choose this route because I'd read good things about the set up, had a friend who did the same and, to me, it seemed like the least "intrusive" thing to do to the stock suspension (by the way, I could be totally wrong on that- so let me know if I'm wrong).

I like the BFGs that I got- I do a lot of driving down in Baja and the big problem we have is sidewall punctures- the BFGs have three plys on the side wall and they do well on sandy beaches. I've run them before on other trucks and like the way they go on the highway... to me, they seem like a good "all around" off-road tire.

But they're expensive.
