TPMS...necessary or not?

Hey guys!
I'll be putting on a new set of wheels and tires soon, curious about whether I need to swap over the tire pressure monitors.
Personally, I don't care if they're there, I'm more concerned with annoying lites and bells if I don't reinstall them.
Any thoughts on how to 'disconnect' the system?
Thanks in advance...

You will have a light on if you don't have the TPMS in the tires on the truck. Law requires them to be on the truck when sold, but I don't think anything says you have to leave them on. Don't think you can disconnect the system, maybe a dealer could.

If it's just a case of not wanting to buy new sensors if you had the steel wheels before, some people have pulled the old sensors, put them in the spare tire, and left the spare in place. That means the spare is not useless, but it also means the sensors are reading a pressure and you have no light on the dash.

...Thanks for the info. Hopefully, I'll have the new wheels and rubber mounted this weekend. I'll post some pics when done.

PGilley had the idea of sticking all of the sensors in a small tire like a riding lawn mower front tire and then sticking that in a storage space in the truck. Then you still get the use of your spare tire.

well I am not sure about the tundra. I currently drive an 07 RAV4 (my tundra is coming in on tuesday), about 6 months ago i replaced the factory wheels with a bigger size and aftermarket rims and tires. I called the company (where I bought my wheels-tire direct.com) and they told me my old sensors should work on my new wheels. I paid around $230 in the dealer, they removed the sensors from the old wheels and installed them on the new ones, calibrated them, with balancing and rotation included.
IT worked perfectly.

I am not sure if this would work too with the tundra, but the guy from the company told me these sensors are kind of more standard now. It would be good to use the old sensors and just pay for installation.

I don't think that the sensors in the steel wheels will fit all aftermarket wheels. I do believe there is a way to disable them, the control for the sensors is behind the glovebox. And the antenna is in the rear of the cab around the third brake light some where. Too busy today but when I get a little while I will try to get the info.

Just curious, but did you have to have the dealer reset them?

I had them done at a Levin tire chain. They said they took care of everything, so I assume its all working right. Guess I'll wait for that flat tire to find out!
