Badly need advice in re: 6" lift plus rims/tires upgrade!

I'm about to get a 2008 Tundra LTD, and am planning to have a 6" ProComp lift installed right after the purchase. Your advice is badly needed on a few issues. First of all, this truck will be mostly used for highway and city driving, with very little off-road driving, and very little hauling/towing involved. Basically, I'll drive it most of the time as most people drive their daily cars...

First question: I was planning on a 4WD, but should I get a 2WD instead, considering my planned use of the vehicle and the 6" lift? Or does a 4WD still make sense? Pros and cons, please.

Also: my goal is to add great looking 20 in. rims and 37 in. tires, making the truck look just like in the picture shown below. Can you suggest specifically what rims and what tires would be the best deal, given my intended use, and compatible with a 6" lift?
How is the above going to affect fuel economy, approximately?

I am relatively new at this, so your constructive suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Will

The 4 wheel drive is nice to have in the snow, but is kinda pointless if you will never use it. Sure you get better resale with a 4x4, but it's also cheaper to buy and own a 4x2. With the lift, your mpg will drop several points. Nobody gets better gas mileage with a 6 inch lift.

I just got my truck back from having the lift installed

I took the lift lit and the wheels and tires over to my local front end/ frame shop Monday. I went over Tuesday morning and saw my truck with its front axle laying on the ground and the guy looked at me like I had lost my mind. He said are you sure you want me to cut 6" out from the crossmember. I had an unexpected quick descision to make. I had no idea that cutting the frame was part of the install process. It may have been my lack of research, but I do not think Procomp tells you this anywhere on the internet. I had tried to download the install directions so that the front end shop could get ready to do the lift. But I could not find them anywhere. In retrospect I am not sure that this was by accident, and if I had know ahead of time I am not sure I would have bought it. I told him to go ahead and cut it and finish the lift. After it was all said and done I am happy to have it done. It drives fine. By the way I told him to save the piece that he sectioned being the optimist maybe they can put it back. lol. Another point you might want to know if you do go through with it, is that the directions tell you something to the effect that the dust sheilds are not going to be reused. It's kind of misleading and obscure, but they really mean "do not reuse". My front end shop kind of took it as an option and they reinstalled them. I went to pick up the truck and several of the warning lights were lit up. He couldn't figure out what the problem was so I took the truck to my local dealer and he did not want to work on the lift but they did pull the codes and said the front right speed sensor was not working. I called Procomp and the guy seemed to know exactly what the problem was. Neither the Toyota tech nor the front end shop mechanic thought this was the problem but I insisted they take the sheilds off and voila the lights went out. I would tell the shop to follow the directions explicitly and if they have any questions call Procomp. The Procomp fellow seemed to be very helpful. I was thinking about doing the 37" wheels too but I found one truck on the internet that was running 37" and the description said something about having to do some trimming to fit them. If I had known more specifics about the trimming I might have went for it but I decided I could always move up later when I found out what exactly was involved. About your question of the 4 wheel drive. I bought it because I do need it on occasion. Usually to get the boat up a steep ramp. According to the window sticker it will cost you another mpg. It will cost a little more up front but I agree with Toxarch you will probably get it back on resale. I just sold my lifted 2000 Superduty 4x4 for $18k when the other 2wd guys were lucky to get $10k. I think the appeal is to have the look and the nads to back it up.

I must agree that the 4x4 is pointless with the great stability and traction control that the Tundra offers. Especially with gas prices inching (sometimes leaping) toward the $4.00 mark

Thank you backtopoolschool for your thorough information, and the others for your input.

I hate having to disappoint those who will read this with their hearts set up on getting a 6" lift and huge tires... but a whole bunch of people have talked me into giving up that idea and convinced me to shoot for something that achieves more balance in terms of looks, power preservation, fuel mileage and prevention of unnecessary wear and tear... And after really looking into it, now it does make sense. So the bottom line for me is that I am going for a Toytec 3/1 lift, either Moto Metal 951s (20"x9") or Ultra Goliaths, and 275/60R20 (33" x 10.83") tires. The 275/60R20s are just big enough to still look good with the chrome rims and the 3/1 lift.

As far as 4WD vs. 4x2, there are several pros and cons for each, but all considered I have come to the conclusion to go for the 4WD, better resale value, even though I'll be taking full advantage of it just on occasion.

I'm also thinking of getting a cap, probably a Leer 100XQ, and a Ranch Hand ram protection...

I think the above options/mods will satisfy my needs for quite a while.

Any comments on the above choices?
