Tire pressure monitor question

I will be getting new wheels for my truck soon. I priced some today at one of those places that do car stereos and wheels. I found a nice set in one of their catalogs that I like. When the guy gave me a price for the wheels and installation it included 300.00 to remove the tire pressure monitors from the stock wheels to the new ones. That sounds very expensive to me. Is that the normal charge to switch the pressure monitors or should I go somewhere else? thanks.

Go to a different place! They have to put a valve stem in each anyway and may charge a fee for taking 3-5 minutes extra per wheel, to take the sensor out of each and replace into the new wheel. Its only a rubber washer and the nut on the outter wheel. I can't stand the scam man. As long as your using the origanal sensors no programming is required, just swap them over. I would say, don't give them one red cent. Wish ya luck.

Go to a well known place. I bought mine from the small guy who gave me a "good deal" I wish now I would have went to big name store that would back what they do. They broke my TPMS off then they forgot to order lug nuts, I had to pay Toyota to reprogram the new TPMS. Never again. I then went to firestone and had them quote me they were 60.00 more.

They are trying to rape you on the TPMS swap charge. I wouldn't go back to them... ever.

Thanks guys. I thought that sound sort of high. I thought how long could it take? Too bad because I really like the wheels. I'll check a couple of other places. I'm sure I'll find the same ones or something similar. Lovin' the Tundra. It's been 3 weeks and I'm enjoying it more each day. Just need to do something about those tired looking steel wheels.

Ah, steel wheels. I am betting they were charging you for new TPMS since the steel ones do not transfer into most wheels. I think Discount Tire has a way to mount the steel sensors inside the wheel and use a regular stem on the wheel. That way, you don't have to buy new sensors and reprogram the computer for them. You do have to pay for the mounting parts, but it's a LOT cheaper than new sensors.

Do you know the brand and maybe model of the wheel? If they are in a catalog, then they are bound to be found on the internet.

They do have the kit, if I recollect the kit was like 10-15 bucks with install at discount.

I assume the stock wheels I have are steel. Anyway I did find the same wheels online that I was considering at the local shop. But I found something else I like a little better on ebay. The seller told me that I can use the original sensors in the new wheels without an adapter. I didn't tell him which stock wheels I have. Anyway below is a link to the wheels on ebay. They are not that fancy. I plan to do a lot of off road stuff so I do not really need expensive stuff to mess up.

Here's a picture of Candyman's truck. He has stock steel wheels on the truck (and after market tires).

Here is a picture of stock 18" alloys.
